Why are Alpha Hydroxy Acids used as
Anti Aging Products?
|
Acids (AHAs) are a group of natural and synthetic compounds that are based on naturally occurring substances. The AHAs more commonly used in cosmetics and skin care products are:
1. Glycolic Acid: derived from sugar cane and used in superficial peels and moisturizers.
2. Lactic Acid: derived from milk products and used in moisturizers
3. Citric acid, malic and tartaric acid are fruit extracts less well documented claims of enhancing skin appearance.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids, particularly glycolic acids, are incorporate into a wide variety of facial and body moisturizers and facial peels designed for home use. In higher concentrations, glycolic acid preparations are used as superficial peels, applied by cosmeticians, dermatologists and other health care providers. Some examples of widely available, over the counter, glycolic acid preparations are shown below. Remember that alpha hydroxy acids can be irritating. By removing some of the dead outer layer of the skin (stratum corneum), alpha hydroxy acids can make the skin more sensitive to the sun. |
