Botulinum Toxin A in Atit-Aging Products and for Hyperhidrosis
Many patients and health care providers are reluctant to use or prescribe regular injections of botulinum toxin A (ie Botox or Dysport) as anti- aging products. What if similar antiaging effects could be achieved by using botulinum toxin as a cream?
In the article referenced below, the authors reviews two products in development that utilize nanotechnology in botulinum toxin containing creams. Nanotechonology enhances the ability of larger molecules, such as botulinum toxin, to penetrate the skin's outer layers.
The authors discuss CosmeTox, made by Transdermal Corp and RT001 made by Revance Therapeutics. Both products demonstrated improvement in wrinkles and aged skin. CosmeTox was also been tested in a study of patients with hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, a condition that can respond to multiple injections of botulinum toxin.
These anti aging studies of topical botulinum toxin are preliminary and concerns regarding safety and potential for misuse need to be addressed. Nevertheless, the idea of a easily applied antiaging botulinum toxin preparation is intriguing!
