In 1991 dermatologists in Utah linked tobacco smoking with facial skin wrinkling.  If you look around when you are seated in a restaurant or auditorium, you might be able to verify this for yourself.  See if you can pick out the smokers by the lines on their face!

More recently, the presence and severity of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) or emphysema has been linked to the degree of facial wrinkling. The patients with more wrinkles had more lung disease. Smoking may damage the collagen and elastin in the lungs as well as the skin, in genetically predisposed individuals.

Smoking has also been shown to prematurely age or wrinkle the skin 'where the sun doesn't shine'.  Smoking was shown to predict the fine wrinkling found on photo-protected arm skin.

Even worse, smoking may exacerbate hair loss and has been postulated to cause premature grey hair in both men and women.

So stop making the tobacco companies richer and throw away those cigarettes...Do it for your lungs, but also do it for your skin!

Editor's comment: Smoking induced aging may work through the same gene that causes a form of genetic premature aging called Werner's syndrome. Patients with Werner's have a defective form of a gene called WRN which produces a protein that helps repair our DNA. Recent researchers report that smokers have a normal gene, but smoking may suppress the protein production that repairs DNA.
