What are Self Tanning Products?
Self-tanners are creams or moisturizers that contain a sugar molecule called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a simple sugar that was found to darken the superficial layers of the skin. DHA combines with some of the proteins in the outermost dead layers of skin to form brown or golden pigments called melanoidins. DHA does not turn on the skin's tanning mechanisms, so the skin does not make more natural melanin or pigment when DHA is applied. That is why self tanners do not offer much protection from the sun.
Self-tanners last only a few days until the dead outer layer (called stratum corneum) peels off. Some of the newer tanning agents also contain a sunscreen, so there is a little more temporary protection--but this protection only lasts until the sunscreen comes off with swimming, sweating or a shower.
Bronzers and self-tanners are thought to be safe and non-toxic. There have been some reports of allergic reactions to the products, which may be to DHA or to other substances in the preparation such as fragrances or preservatives. As always, please check with your doctor before using if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or nursing. |
