What is Resveratrol and why is it considered a potential Anti Aging Product?

Reserverstrol is in a group of polyphenolic compounds called phytoalexins. Phyto (meaning plant) alexins are produced by plants when they are under attack by pathogens.

Resveratrol has been found in a variety of food substances including grapes, berries, peanuts and cocoa. Resveratrol is found in significant amounts in red wine. There is more resveratrol in red wine than white wine as resveratrol is found in the grape skin (and seeds) and the grape skin is removed before white wine is fermented.

Some studies report that resveratrol may prolong life in certain organisms, including some flies, worms and yeast. No study has yet proven that resveratrol extends life in mammals or man.

Topical application of resveratrol is being studied as a possible absorbant for free radicals that damage the skin after Ultraviolet B exposure.

Resveratrol capsules should not be taken without appropriate advice from your health care provider as the side effects of large amounts are unknown. Wikipedia references a comment suggesting that resveratrol may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills.
