Quercetin as possible Anti-Aging Product
Quercetin is a naturally occurring chemical, in the flavenoid family. Quercetin is found in a wide range of plants including red onion, capers, apples, tea, cherries, raspberries, leafy vegetables, red grapes, broccoli and cranberries, among others.
Quercetin is also known as "Natural Yellow 10" dye.
Quercetin is used for a number of purported healthful benefits, including
- anti-inflammatory effects
- anti-histaminic effects
- anti-oxidant effects
- anti-cancer effects
All of these studies are fairly limited in scope. In skin care products, Quercetin is used mainly for its anti-oxidant effects especially since Quercetin may enhance the effects of topical Vitamin C.
Quercetin is used both topically in skin care and taken as an oral supplement. It is important to note that Quercetin can interfered with some oral medications including some antibiotics and some drugs that may be broken down less quickly because of the effects of Quercetin on drug metabolism.
Editor's comments:
The discovery of the effects of Quercetin is more evidence that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is good for us overall. Please remember to tell your health care provider about any and all supplements you may be taking.
