Twin Study of Aging Factors | Non Genetic Factors Affecting Aging
We all recognize by now that a large part of how we look and age depends on the genetic hand we are dealt. A recent study of twins, cited below, however, looks at other factors which may play a role in how we age and the appearance of aging.
The investigators looked at a large study of twins, who had been asked to fill out an extensive life survey, including such factors such as whether they smoked, had been divorced, their weight or weight gain, and whether they used sunscreens.
As you might expect, a twin who smoked or failed to use sunscreens appeared older than the twin without these factors. Interestingly, a twin who had been divorced, or used anti-depressants, also appeared older.
Weight gain after age 40 was also associated with a younger looking face, although the authors certainly are not recommending weight gain as a rejuvenation technique.
Editor's comments:
At least a few factors seem to be under our control when it comes to skin aging! The take away points from this article are to Avoid Smoking and Wear Your Sunscreen regularly.
