Why is Mangosteen Fruit used in some Anti Aging Products?

Mangosteens are a tropical fruit native to South East Asia, and sometimes known as the "Queen of Fruits". It is prized for its fragrance and flavor and has a reputation for a deep purple color. Mangosteen juice also has a reputation for staining clothing a similar purple hue.

Mangosteens are sometimes referred to as one type of 'superfruit' because of it's nutrient and anti-oxidant contents. The long term or high dose safety and efficacy of mangosteens or other superfruits has yet to be determined and too much of one fruit such as mangosteen is not recommended.

In the article cited below, a clinical study is reported in which participants applied a cream contain teas, pomegranate and mangosteen extracts to one side of the face and placebo cream to the other side. More participants noticed an improvement in skin texture with the combination cream than from the placebo skin care product. It should be noted however, that this report is one, relatively small study and no definitive conclusions regarding mangosteen's potential for anti-aging effects can be made at this point.
