Why is Açaí Berry used as an anti aging product?

Açaí is derived from a rapidly growing palm tree found in Latin America.  The Açaí berries or fruit is used as a food staple and is cooked and served in a variety of ways.

In recent years, the Açaí fruit has been harvested for a purported health benefits and treatment of a wide range of ailments.  Açaí is reported to have anti-oxidant effects which makes it an appealing additive to skin care products.  Anti-oxidants are said to act a 'free radical scavengers', meaning that anti-oxidants absorb some of the damaging effects of high energy oxygen molecules released by ultraviolets and other skin stressors.

There is a sparsity of data supporting the claims that anti-oxidants in general, and Açaí in particular, are effective as skin care treatments.  Açaí berry products are marketed as cosmeceuticals, and therefore are not subject to FDA standards for proof of efficacy.
